Topdrawer Announces Acquisition of Kolo

Combined retail operations will offer Tools for Nomads designed to make life on-the-go more productive and comfortable

BOSTON, January 18, 2017 – Topdrawer, a Japanese retailer of useful items for modern life on-the-go, today announced that it has acquired Kolo, a maker of premium photo albums, journals and travel accessories. Topdrawer and Kolo will combine their e-commerce stores immediately, with products from both companies being available at Peter Dunn, who has been running Topdrawer since 2014 and was a co-founder of Kolo, will continue to lead Topdrawer’s retail and e-commerce businesses across the U.S. and Japan while incorporating Kolo into the operations.

“Kolo has always been focused on creating the world’s best photo albums for helping people to capture and share life’s most important moments,” said Peter Dunn, founder of Kolo and president of Topdrawer. “We started Kolo nearly twenty years ago, and over the years our community has grown to transcend professions and demographics. As part of Topdrawer, we will redouble our commitment to making beautiful photo albums, journals and bags, which will perfectly complement Topdrawer’s selection of tools for work, life and travel.”

Kolo was founded in 1998, and over the last two decades the company has sold millions of photo albums. Topdrawer is a boutique division of Itoya, an iconic Japanese retailer that was founded more than 113 years ago. Itoya and Topdrawer have been selling Kolo products for the last decade, and with this acquisition, Kolo’s entire product line will be available at Topdrawer’s six retail locations.

“As creative professionals, our office has to fit in a bag. In the course of one day, we might be working on a plane, train, cafe or park bench, before ending up at our home base,” commented Dunn. “With the combined operations of Kolo and Topdrawer, we’re committed to helping people do their best work wherever they are, using tools that are as functional as they are elegant.”

Topdrawer creates and curates high-quality products for creative professionals, including bags, apparel, eyewear, wallets, fine pens, notebooks, travel electronics, photo albums, laptop cases and bento boxes. Many of the products that Topdrawer carriers are exclusive to the store, such as travel goods from Japanese brand Color Chart, Romeo fine pens and Merippa house shoes.

Topdrawer has two retail locations in the U.S., and four in Japan. In May 2016, the company moved its international headquarters from San Francisco to Boston.
